All about disability – and the aids that can help.

Disabled Shop Writing Competition Winners

The winners of the Disabled Shop Blogging Competition have now been announced!

The competition was judged by Liz MacKenzie, Director of Disability Writes, and by Barabara Howard, director of disabled charity Mosaic.

Both the results and the judge’s comments follow:

An interesting set of entries with, for both judges, an out and out winner. We have also ‘commended’ two of the other blogs:

WINNER: Eulogy to my miniscope by Steff of Grymm and Epic.

This blog was written in a very engaging style; funny, very readable and with an excellent ending. We really enjoyed the way the writer had written from a different ‘angle’ by writing in diary style to her miniscope – very imaginative. The piece was entertaining from start to finish, which set it apart from all the other blogs, so well done to the writer.

COMMENDED: The Cure: An Alzheimer’s Story by Ellen Denton

This writer captured very well the experience for relatives when a member of the family has Alzheimer’s. It was a poignant piece that was informative without being ‘dry’.

COMMENDED: 25 reasons why being a Lyme patient automatically makes you a badass by Candice.

The title in itself draws the reader in to a well written and amusing piece. The experience of the writer was well-conveyed and managed to inform as well as tell the story.

Steff wins £250 pounds in cash, while Ellen and Candice both win £25!

We at The Disabled Shop would also like to point out a a very moving series about the writer’s pareplegic brother, as well as the excellent blog run by our winner, Steff: Grymm and Epic.

We have also been looking for a freelance writer and have been so impressed by the standard of many entries that we are also going to be asking several competition entrants to write for us on an ongoing, paid basis, so expect to see some names from the competition on the blog again!

We would like to thank you all very much for the really high quality entries – what a talented lot you are!

Well done to the winner AND the commended – it’s good to see people writing to open the reader’s eyes to a multitude of issues related to disability. Do we know yet who’s going to be contributing more in future?

Not yet, Jordan, we are going to have a staff meeting to choose when business calms down a little!
